In the murky waters of the law, defence and prosecution do whatever it takes to win. Barrister Jack Roper (John Hannah) rejected his former mentor and top prosecutor, Laurence Scammell QC (Paul Freeman) to set up a defence-only chambers with passion for justice. Professional rivalry becomes personal when Laurence's beautiful and talented daughter, Laura (Lisa Faulkner) becomes ever more deeply embroiled in the two men's struggle, forcing her to choose between deeply-held family loyalty and her conscience.
Encouraged by his glamorous wife, the ruthless Honor Scammell (Penny Downie), Laurence resolves to crush the opposition for good, no matter what it takes. With both sides drawn into ever fiercer conflict, there can only be one winner.

Head of the defence chambers, Jack Roper (John Hannah), has thrown his working life into turmoil after his single-minded pursuit of the truth and justice has left him facing a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Accused of fabricating a defence for his client, Jack refuses to back down and jeopardises his own career as well as everyone else at his chambers when news leaks out and the work begins to dry up.
Tensions run high between Jack's chambers and those of the prosecution, headed by his old mentor, Laurence Scammel QC (Paul Freeman). Laurence is quick to condemn Jack's actions, much to the annoyance of his daughter and ex-employee Laura (Lisa Faulkner) who now works for Jack's firm.
