Despite the red robe and wig, Judge John Deed is no average high court judge. Good-looking, fit and fifty-something, he has a rakish charm that belies his sharp intellect. His passion for justice and his maverick approach set him at odds with the Lord Chancellor's department. This judge's individual approach too often flies in the face of convention for his own good as he determinedly avoids the traditionalism the system tries to force upon him. Contains the complete series 1 as well as the pilot episode. Includes: 1. Pilot - Exacting Justice, 2. Rough Justice, 3. Duty of Care, 4. Appropriate Response, 5. Hidden Agenda. Judge John Deed has become one of Martin Shaws defining roles. The sharp intellect, rakish charm, keen wit and passionate belief in justice were all qualities G F Newman had in mind for Martin when writing the series.
Martin Shaws Judge John Deed is proving to be a reliable ratings winner for the BBC. And its not too tricky to see why.The set-up is simple. Shaws title character is a senior, experienced Judge who presides over an assortment of cases in his court room. Behind the scenes though, hes a crusader of sorts, battling it out with the establishment, right through to members of the Cabinet. Deed is a man, of course, whos not averse to a few problems of his own in his private life, not least with the opposite sex, and when you mix all of these factors together, it seems like a good, solid, reliable cocktail for an hour of drama. What lifts it above that though is Shaws superb performance as Judge John Deed. To be fair, hes given some questionably far-fetched material to work with across the duration of this second series (all the episodes of which are collected on this double DVD set), but he nonetheless remains magnetic when he hits his stride, and Judge John Deed as a result is rightly enjoying its fair share of success. You wont always agree with Judge John Deed, and at times, youre likely to find yourself outright perplexed. But never, ever, less than entertained. Recommended. --Jon Foster SynopsisJudge John Deed, although at the top of his game, frequently crosses paths with the establishment and is unafraid of ruffling some feathers. Though he has no qualms about arguing it out with the likes of the Home Secretary and Lord Chancellors Office, women have always been a major stumbling block in Deeds life. Will therapist Rachel Crawcheck help him see the error of his womanising ways?
