It is where Jack the Ripper carried out his horrific crimes. It is where The Krays constructed their Empire of Crime based on sadomasochistic punishments. This series unearths a Whitechapel full of Gothic shadows, cobblestones and ancient hostelries. Theres fear in the Huguenot weaving houses of Wilkes Street, and terrifying discoveries in the dark corners and rooftops around Brick Lane. Ed Buchan joins DI Chandler and hard-bitten DS Miles as their historical advisor operating out of the bowels of the police station among musty tomes of the crime archive. Chandler is convinced crimes of the past hold the key to solving crimes of the present. The team is tested by bloody and vicious murders on their own doorstep. Do crimes such as the Thames Torso murders, HH Holmes, The Zodiac Killer and The Ratcliffe Highway murders unlock the truth? In Whitechapel, history isnt dead - its deadly. | The Take / 1 Disc 300 BahtBased on the best-selling book by Martina Cole, The Take follows the story of Freddie Jackson, a man whos just left prison. And its fair to say has no intention of leaving a life of crime behind him. Thanks to the book of contacts hes accrued while inside, hes looking to put his newly found knowledge to commercial, and criminal, use. Played by Tom Hardy, in a strong leading turn, Jackson doesnt take long to get back to business. The Take lands him a London rife with gang warfare though, and we soon get the impression that this is not a safe place to be. Events start in the mid 1980s, and the narrative of the drama then covers the next decade, and the cultural and political changes that encompasses. And Jacksons life doesnt quite go the way hed envisaged
Co-starring Brian Cox and Charlotte Riley, The Take packs plenty in over its four instalments, and it doesnt hold back on portraying just how brutal the London underworld can be. Yet its gripping drama, nonetheless, spearheaded by a superb turn from Tom Hardy in the lead role. Granted, it crams too much into four episodes, and often has to gallop through events. Plus, theres a familiarity to the narrative. But this is a gritty, well-released adaptation of a strong book, and worth seeking out. - | Outnumbered Series 3 / 1 Disc 300 BahtFirmly established as a jewel in the BBC's comedy crown.. The Daily Mail
It remains by a long distance the finest mainstream British sitcom of recent years... The Guardian
Herein lies all four series and the 2009 Christmas special of Britains favourite comedy series, Outnumbered. Thats four school years of spookily familiar and often bafflingly surreal family dilemmas, traversed by Pete and Sue Brockman and their brood.
From the seemingly innocent, can I have a biscuit? to progressive theological debate, what would Jesus do if someone stole his mobile? Outnumbered has redefined the family comedy by bringing it closer to home. | Back Catalogue Adds - Early Doors 1 / 1 Disc 300 BahtA gentle yet compelling story of life, love, loneliness and blocked urinals. Each evening, the regulars bring their particular foibles and characterstics up to the bar. Overhearing their conversations and reliving the events in each of their lives is both moving and amusing. Series 2 The welcome return of the gentle, critically acclaimed comedy set entirely in The Grapes, a small pub in the North of England. Into this warm, slightly hopeless environment come a group of lovable characters who like a pint, but more than that, like each other. Lads Joe and Duffy command centre table and most of the conversation, largely at the expenses of landlord Ken's less acute regulars, such as Eddie, for whom a change in the town's traffic flow can become a preoccupation Features As per original releases Review : This comedy is in my opinion one of the best things to come out of British TV since Fawlty Towers, its got all the elements that make compulsive viewing, pathos, tear inducing emotion but above all side splitting humour. | Back Catalogue Adds - Hazell 1 / 3 Discs 700 BahtThis series was a big favourite of mine when originally screened in the late seventies and I was very pleased when I learnt of the DVD release. Hazell still cuts a stylish figure driving through 70's London Town in his 'new motor', a resplendent Triumph Stag. The use of plenty of location shoots gives the series a more authentic feel and certainly makes it a more watchable experience than other programmes of a similiar vintage. | Back Catalogue Adds - Ronnie Barker / Seven of one / 1 Disc 300 BahtA welcome DVD release for this series of seven single comedies featuring the many faces of Ronnie Barker. As well as highlighting Barker's extraordinary comic range (and providing an early screen outing for David Jason) the series was the genesis of not one but two much-loved British sitcoms. Open All Hours appears here in embryonic pilot form and "Prisoner and Escort" went on to become perhaps Barker's best-loved creation, Porridge. Also included are "My Old Man", "Spanner's Eleven", "Another Fine Mess", "One Man's Meat" and "I'll Fly You For A Quid" (where Barker plays a both father and son). | Back Catalogue Adds - Cutting it 1 / 3 Discs 700 BahtOne of a growing number of female-centred dramas, the first series of Cutting It was a sleeper hit for the BBC. Though its rival hairdresser premise seems fluffy, its classy gloss, off-beat scripting and strong cast make it as addictive as many of the outstanding TV series coming from the US. The drama unfolds when ambitious hairdresser Allie Henshall (Sarah Parish) wants to open a second salon. But her husband and business partner would prefer to start a family. Even when she puts in a bid for a property opposite her salon, Allie is beaten by rival hairdresser Mia Bevan (Amanda Holden). As a business war begins between Allie's Henshall Ferraday salon and Mia's Blade Runner, Allie has to overcome the reappearance of an old flame, Mia's husband, who is happy to rekindle his relationship with her. As the relationship histories among the characters become absurdly intertwined, it is to the cast's credit that the human dynamics of the story surpass its plot. Though there are certainly moments of parody (take Mia's yogic warm-ups with her staff each morning) and questionable twists, Cutting It gives its leading ladies some sharp and funny lines to work with and the space to do so. Both Parish and Holden run the gamut of emotions despite the seemingly clear-cut good woman / bitch divide between their characters initially. Their actions may strain the limits of credibility, but these women hold attention effortlessly. | Back Catalogue Adds - The High Life / 1 Disc 300 BahtWritten and performed by Alan Cumming and Forbes Masson, The High Life tells of Air Scotia's most useless cabin crew twosome, camp alcoholic Sebastian (Cumming) and insecure sex-obsessed Steve (Masson), and their various escapades. This six-part series was a product of a pilot (pun intended) for Comic Asides, which was eventually reworked as Episode Four in the series (Choob). This is not everyone's cup of tea, but if your thing is pantoesque quickfire dialogue, bitchy quips and much alliteration aplenty you will LOVE it. Highlights include the gorgeously camp Batman spoof in the final episode, the Eurovision Song Contest entry "Pif Paf Pof (I Want To Have It Off)", complete with black lycra cycling shorts, and the hilarious opening titles and theme song, also written by Cumming and Masson. Siobhan Redmond is also fabulous as head air steward Shona Spurtle - "Hitler in tights". A truly original comedy gem that should have been given a second series, before Cummings went Hollywood-bound. Dearie me! | Back Catalogue Adds - The Onedin Line 1 / 2 Discs 600 BahtAn exciting saga of ambitious men, tempestuous women and stormy seas. Set in England in the 1860s, when British naval strength was the envy of Europe, the series charts the fortunes of a clever and determined ship-owner whose private life is as stormy as the seas he sails. James Onedin (Peter Gilmore) is the son of a waterside shopkeeper who has died and left him with no inheritance. All James has is a legacy of 25 Francs and a shrewd business mind. Despite his scheming sister and her husband, who run a rival shipping line, he is resolute in his attempt to start a shipping company in this changing world. Onedin is ruthless but farsighted, and with steam a possibility for the future, he swiftly embarks on his rise from impoverished seaman to wealthy ship-owner and founder of The Onedin Line. | Back Catalogue Adds - Wild West / 1 Disc 300 BahtStarring Dawn French and Catherine Tate. With Bill Bailey, David Bradley, Anne-Marie Duff, Sean Foley, Liza Goddard, Richard Mylan and Stewart Wright. Mary Tregwednack lives above her Post Office in the fictitious Cornish village of St Gweep with her neurotic partner, Angela. Lesbians until something better comes up, they enjoy the cosy security of life in a tight-knit coastal community, but their chances of finding suitable men are more remote than the village itself. For behind this picture postcard exterior, witchcraft and wife-swapping are more a way of life than cream teas and Cornish pasties. Here, the village bobby is Police Calendars Mr March, the cosy pub hosts swingers evenings and the local museum is dedicated to witchcraft
Review :- A very funny comedy with a top class cast. This was originally on the BBC and it was hilarious. It's not your usual comedy where you can see the joke coming or the obvious funny gag and then you laugh sort of thing, this is more of a dark comedy,as you might call it.To me it's more the characters who are funniest rather than the storylines. | Mad Dogs Series 2 / 1 Disc 300 BahtReunites Woody (Max Beesley) Quinn (Philip Glenister) Baxter (John Simm), and Rick (Marc Warren) as they try and escape their Majorcan holiday from hell. Picking up from where the series finale left off, the lads survey the damage at Alvos villa and decide to make their way home. They clear out any sign of them ever being there, pack up their stuff and take off as fast as they can. Deciding against taking a plane home, they head towards the ferry port to pick up the next boat to Barcelona so they can travel overland back to England. Trouble is, they dont end up in Barcelona. They find themselves in Ibiza, with three million euros in 500 euro notes. You cant ignore that amount of cash, but how do you get that kind of money home? A chance encounter in a casino with a woman called Carmen seems to hold the answers. Little do they know, changing the money is the least of their problems. Someone knows what theyre doing and they want their money back
| Northern Lights City Lights / 5 Discs 1,050 BahtThe Northern Lights And City Lights Box Set tells the story of competitive best friends Howie and Colin, who are married to sisters, live next door to one another, and work for the same company. In "Northern Lights", Howie and Colin attempt to outdo each other's achievements, leading to conflict in their friendship. In "City Lights", Howie and Colin witness a gangland shooting and have to join the Witness Protection Scheme, leading to the forced relocation of their families to London. This DVD also includes the "Christmas Lights" episode. REVIEW :- This series was everything that was promised on the cover. It was funny in the right places, sappy in the right places and even serious or sad in the right places. Robson Green and Mark Benton were wonderful together as was Nicola Stephenson as Colin Armstrong's wife. Great British TV with Robson Green, this series is for anyone who likes a good comedy but not slapstick - Great, great, great! I wish I could give more than 5 stars. City Lights was not as brilliant as Christmas Lights or Northern Lights but still great. | London to Brighton / 1 Disc 300 Baht2006 proved to be an impressive year for British cinema, but London To Brighton, in spite of being one of the most deserving of acclaim, slipped off most peoples radar. A drama set around Londons underworld, and attempts to escape it, London To Brighton tells the story of a twelve year old runaway girl, Joanne, and Kelly, a prostitute. Their attempts to get out of London arent straightforward, not least because of whos on their tail, and the result is a compelling, tightly-written movie, and as good as anything Britain produced for the big screen in 2006. London To Brighton is a mixture of thriller and drama, very gritty, not always easy to watch, and resolute in pulling its many punches. Written and directed with care by Paul Andrew Williams, perhaps his wisest move was casting the simply superb Lorraine Stanley as Kelly, and her compelling performance lends an added magnetism to an already-taut piece of cinema. London To Brighton is a challenging, bold and strong film. Its not perhaps the perfect tonic for a quiet night in, not for the faint hearted. | Law & Order UK Series 6 / 2 Discs 600 BahtAfter the death of xxxx (!) in in the previous series I believed that this series may go down-hill but I was so very wrong... because this series went simply from strength to strength. The cast, now including new DI Sam Casey (played by Paul Nicholls) the team of police officers, detectives and barristers must try and not only crack down criminals but also make sure they go down and get punished for their crimes.
The reason why this drama works so well is because it shows a clear and different comparison between the ways the police and the barristers work together and on their own. It's great to follow the story and cases of crimes through (because in most police and crime drama's you see the hunt to catch the criminal OR the effort to put them away in a courtroom)... but this drama works so hard and manages to provide you with both very well. I find it so interesting to follow these crimes all the way through the law process and I really do applaud this show for that.
The acting talents and performances by all of the actors and actresses in this drama are top quality. The very talented team; including the acting talents of Freema Agyeman(known for her work also on Doctor Who), Bradley Walsh, Peter Davison and Dominic Rowan this drama offers you not only great initiative, drive and storylines but also provides realistic actors that makes this show believable and simply extrodinary.
My favourite episode of the whole series must be 'Dawn Till Dusk' where the team has to try and crack 3 cases in one very long day. The cases include one of police intimidation, one of murder and one of family dispute... but when the arrest the wrong man and accuse him of murder the team start to realise that maybe theyv'e bitten off more than they can chew. This series is an absolute gem and it just keeps going from strength to strength. An excellent series and a reccomended buy :) | Upstairs Downstairs - Series 2 / 2 Discs 600 BahtOne of the most loved television series of all time is brought back to life with a stellar cast and a story full of scandal, romance and intrigue set against a sweeping historical backdrop. Series Two Set in the year preceding World War Two, 165 Eaton Place reopens its doors and welcomes you back into the enthralling lives of its inhabitants, both upstairs and down. And as romance, heartbreak and intrigue engulf the household, its inhabitants discover that the real threat is much closer to home
| Mad Men Season 4 / 3 Discs 700 BahtFrom the off, Mad Men was reaping plaudits and acclaim, as critics and audiences lined up to declare it one of the best new modern drama series that television has brought us. Whats perhaps even more impressive, though, is that its kept this going. That, four seasons in, its not just managed to keep up the elegant stylings that got many to sit up and take notice in the first place. But that its delivering some terrific television as it does so. Season four puts added emphasis onto Don Draper, expertly played by Jon Hamm, and this in turn throws the spotlight onto the people closest to him. Furthermore, Mad Men, as always, finds room to explore the supporting characters, with several compelling threads to follow. Without giving too much away, the show also picks up from the events at the end of season three, and the characters concerned find the ride just a little bumpier than they might have been expecting. Its a terrific show. Played by a cast of characters who inhabit their roles expertly, Mad Men is what happens when a group of people who are genuinely expert at their jobs come together at just the right time. In a decade that has seen a collection of excellent television series laying claim to our time and attention, Mad Men stands proud as one of the finest of the lot. | Eternal Law Series 1 / 2 Discs 600 BahtSet in the ancient English city of York, Eternal Law is about angels living amongst us, helping and guiding humans when they are at their most desperate. The series starts with one grumpy, seen-it-all-a-million times angel called Zak arriving to start a fresh tour of duty with his new colleague, the constantly amazed neophyte, Tom, who has never before spent time with humans. They live in a ramshackle house stuffed with books and paintings, where they are looked after by the beautiful, mysterious Mrs. Sheringham. We discover that in his previous tour of duty Zak did a terrible, completely forbidden thing--he fell in love with a human woman, Hannah. To his horror he realises that Hannah has been put in York to tempt him, to test him. Although he loves her with every fibre of his body he knows he can never be with her. It is a cruel, bruised, aching romance. There are angels in all walks of life but our angels are lawyers. Which means that, every episode, they have to deal with humans at their lowest and most exposed. It could be a man standing trial for murder; a bitter custody battle; a fight to save an old people's home; a frightened young squaddie accused of cowardice. Our angels strive their best to fight for their clients, to win their cases, to put them back on the straight and narrow. They don't always win but they always fight to the last. Eternal Law is emotional, funny and fresh. Each episode ends with Zak and Tom high up on York Minster, wings out, sharing a bottle of wine and talking about this week's case. They find human beings complicated, contradictory, vain, baffling, greedy, passionate, illogical... and utterly, compellingly wonderful. | The Royal Series 1 / 2 Discs 600 BahtThe Royal is a British medical drama series produced by ITV. The title of the series refers to the fictional "St Aidan's Royal Free Hospital", located in the rural seaside town of Elsinby close to Aidensfield and the actual towns of Whitby and Scarborough. The hospital served both the local farmers and townsfolk and visiting holidaymakers. The show was set in the 1960s and the outside scenes were filmed in the North Yorkshire holiday resort of Scarborough. It began as a spin-off from the other popular ITV show set in North Yorkshire, Heartbeat. Stars of the show include Ian Carmichael, Wendy Craig, Robert Daws and Amy Robbins. The Royal is a must have for anyone who likes decent, well written drama with twists and turns along the way. The stand out performances come from Michelle Hopkirk as Lizzie and Andy Wear as Alun Morris - both bring lots of humor to each episode and epitomize the fashion of the swinging 60s! There's even cameo appearances from Tricia Penrose, David Lonsdale and Mark Jordan - what more could you want? | Boys from the Blackstuff / 3 Discs 700 BahtAlan Bleasdale's Boys from the Blackstuff gripped television audiences in 1982 with its bleak, fiercely funny exploration of the effect of the UK's economic depression on a group of Merseyside characters, originally introduced in his 1978 play, The Blackstuff. Bleasdale's writing is unsparing in both its pain and its unconditional affection for characters being pushed to the very limit of civilisation. Yosser Hughes (the outstanding Bernard Hill) is still, and rightly, recognised as one of the great creations of modern television drama: a man on the brink of madness, unlikeable, ostracised, digging a deeper hole with every desperate act, but ultimately a human being deserving our sympathy. The performances are wonderful throughout: particularly Peter Kerrigan as Malone, the once giant union leader reduced to a shadow but still with the spark that commands love and respect; Michael Angelis as Chrissie and, in a typically sharp cameo, Julie Walters as his wife. "My dreams still give me hope and faith in my class. I can't believe there's no hope," says Chrissie towards the end. And it's testament to Bleasdale's skill and the resilience of his characters that somehow, that flicker of hope remains unextinguished. The blackstuff--the tarmac--of the title becomes increasingly ironic. There is none. The boys have no work. The dole office scenes have a grimly nostalgic, documentary quality. Each second drips another droplet of disillusionment on people whose expectations are crushed by every effort to haul themselves up. Thatcher's Britain was a cruel place for many people. The unspoken question that hangs in the air after watching Bleasdale's poetic dissection of ruined lives is, have things really changed that much? Television drama doesn't come any more powerful or honest than this. | Above Suspicion Two - The Red DahliaDC Anna Travis (Kelly Reilly) is back, reunited with the inimitable DCI James Langton (Ciarán Hinds), to face her most challenging and terrifying case yet. When the body of a young woman is discovered, sadistically mutilated and drained of blood, it would seem an ominous re-enactment of the infamously unsolved murder from 1940s Los Angeles, dubbed the Black Dahlia . Travis races to stay one step ahead of the killer, using the original case as some sort of instruction manual. Meanwhile, the underlying sexual friction between her and Langton threatens to derail the investigation. However, they must pull together to stop this depraved copycat killer before he strikes again. | Jane Eyre / 1 Disc 300 BahtIn the 19th Century-set story, Jane Eyre (Mia Wasikowska) suddenly flees Thornfield Hall, the vast and isolated estate where she works as a governess for Adèle Varens, a child under the custody of Thornfields brooding master, Edward Rochester (Michael Fassbender). The imposing residence and Rochesters own imposing nature have sorely tested her resilience. With nowhere else to go, she is extended a helping hand by clergyman St. John Rivers (Jamie Bell) and his family. As she recuperates in the Rivers Moor House and looks back upon the tumultuous events that led to her escape, Jane wonders if the past is ever truly past
| Love in a Cold Climate - The Complete Series / 2 Discs 600 BahtAn eight-part adaptation of two classic novels by Nancy Mitford, and starring Judi Dench, Michael Williams and Michael Aldridge, Love in a Cold Climate presents the English upper class of the Twenties and Thirties as seen by one of its most gifted chroniclers. The series traces the unconventional lives and loves of the family of Lord Alconleigh, dominated by the eccentric, irascible Uncle Matthew - an affectionate and only lightly embellished caricature of the Mitford siblings father, Lord Redesdale. With several scenes drawn from Nancy Mitford s childhood memories (not least her father s alarming penchant for hunting his children with a bloodhound), the story also encompasses the economic and political crises of the Thirties and the upheavals of the Second World War, which would ultimately bring to an end the privileged world inhabited by the family. Love in a Cold Climate was adapted by novelist and dramatist Simon Raven, and directed by Donald McWhinnie (Rumpole of the Bailey). | Roots 30th Anniversary / 7 Discs 980 Bahtased on Alex Haley's bestseller, the 1977 TV mini-series Roots told the harrowing story of one man's ancestors, commencing with African warrior Kunta Kinte, captured, transported to America, stripped of his dignity, his rights, and even his name. He tries but fails to escape before accepting he can never return to Africa. He marries and bears a daughter, Kizzy, who is callously sold, then raped by her new "master". However, her son, Chicken George, a resourceful dab hand with gamecocks, lives long enough to see his own children attain a liberty of sorts following the Civil War. Roots is told in the same, accessible televisual language as The Waltons or Bonanza, yet it is never bland or evasive. It leaves no doubt as to the torment and abuse suffered by blacks, and although the series' conclusion is fictionally satisfying, for many of the black characters their only hope lies in generations yet unborn. It is sturdy enough drama but its greatest, most revolutionary effects were social. It persuaded American audiences to regard their history from a black perspective, and to see how--against odds far more desperate than those the pilgrims faced--Africans laid claim to their status as free African-Americans. Roots was massively popular, triggering a craze for genealogy and paving the way for series like 1979's Holocaust, which similarly raised the public's awareness of the slaughter of the Jews under Hitler. Most importantly, Roots changed forever the way black people were depicted on American TV. | Billy Connolly's Route 66 / 2 Discs 600 BahtBilly Connolly takes the ultimate road trip as he travels the worlds most famous highway, Route 66, Billy turns Easy Rider and follows a lifelong dream as he makes the iconic 2488 mile journey from Chicago to Santa Monica. The Sun Genuinely hilarious
Jones has got the knack for naturally funny dialogue Daily Telegraph Stella draws you in to its warm, quirky world The Guardian | Call the midwife / 2 Discs 600 BahtThe hit BBC drama series which tells the moving and true-to-life stories of a group of midwives working in London's East End in the 1950s. Newly-qualified midwife Jenny Lee is the latest arrival at Nonnatus House, a convent in one of the poorest areas of London. Jenny is welcomed by the nuns and befriended by the other midwives good-time girl Trixie, sensible Cynthia and fellow newcomer, the posh, fish-out-of water, Chummy. We are introduced to the local community through the eyes of the young nurse as she cycles out to tend to her patients. Although the life that greets Jenny is a world away from what shes used to, she immerses herself in the births, deaths, intrigues and romances of a community she rapidly learns to love. Jenny Agutter, Miranda Hart, Pam Ferris and newcomer Jessica Raine are all superb. The Guardian Some of the most moving acting shown on prime time for many years ...a terrific drama Daily Telegraph Utterly winning ...A drama to answer all our prayers" Sunday Times | Doc Martin 5 / 2 Discs 600 BahtThis latest series of 'Doc Martin' lost a couple of characters in Auntie Joan and Pauline which was a pity but it did have adequate replacements in the shape of Auntie Ruth and Morwenna. I wouldn't say that this series was quite as good as the first two but it was definitely on a par with series three and four. As always, the scenery is stunning and the acting generally excellent across the board. Some of the storylines were perhaps a little farcical and there was maybe too much of PC Penhale but by and large I believe there is still plenty of life left in and around Port Wenn. Martin Clunes is always a treat as the grumpy Doc but Caroline Catz is his equal with her terrific portrayal of Louisa. Series 5 was consistantly watchable, I do feel though that the Doc and Louisa actually work better when they are apart so to speak so it will be interesting to see how things develop if there is a series 6, which I hope there will be. Still recommended viewing. | Kidnap & Ransom 2 / 1 Disc 300 BahtThe first series of Kidnap and Ransom was far too successful for it to be a one off and predictably Trevor Eve has returned to our screens as hostage negotiator Dominic King for this three part story. King was very obviously doing his own thing in the first series, but this time round, if anything, he seems to be even more of a maverick and a complete law unto himself. Interesting beginning with King shown on a lake in a rowing boat shoving a sack covered parcel which looks suspiciously like a body, into the water, and then a reversal to `two weeks earlier'. It was clear at that point that this was a marker for what was coming later to add extra interest, though what this was all about remained a mystery until right at the end. Not that any extra interest was really needed as the story is engrossing and action packed. This time the setting is Kashmir and starts with King going about his everyday business sorting out the release of a kidnapped family. However, things go wrong and the kidnappers hijack a bus. The daughter of a key politician is one of the passengers although this is not immediately known by any of the kidnappers or passengers including her one night stand who is with her. Clearly she is a key element in the story, but not wishing to spoil it I will not give any further developments away. Suffice to say this has sufficient twists and turns to keep the viewer highly engaged and the climax is very tense. This is very good and compelling entertainment. | Love Soup, complete collection / 4 Discs 800 BahtPenned by the sitcom legend, David Renwick, (One Foot in the Grave, Jonathan Creek), Love Soup is a romantic comedy drama that takes at entertaining and provocative look at one woman's search for sanity, sex and a soul-mate. | The Borgias - Season 1 / 3 Discs 700 BahtFrom the makers of The Tudors, The Borgias is the sordid saga of one of the most remarkable and legendary families in history. Set in 15th century Italy at the height of the Renaissance, The Borgias chronicles the corrupt rise of patriarch Rodrigo Borgia (Academy Award® winner Jeremy Irons) to the papacy, where he proceeds to commit every sin in the book to amass and retain power, influence and enormous wealth for himself and his family. The unbounded audacity of this original crime family went on to inspire Machiavelli's The Prince and Mario Puzo's The Godfather. Don't miss a minute of the lavish, sexy, scandalous drama from the creative mind of Academy Award® winner Neil Jordan. The epic saga of Romes original godfathers--The Mail On Sunday | Peep Show Series 7 / 1 Disc 300 BahtPeep Show is back: the multi-award-winning, critically acclaimed comedy now returns for its seventh series. Mark (David Mitchell) and Jeremy (Robert Webb) are still sharing their flat in south London, but their journey through life is becoming ever more complicated--and bitterly funny. Hear their deepest, darkest and most socially unacceptable thoughts as they navigate their way through a surprising role reversal: Mark, the inhibited, obsessive white-collar drone, is forced to rethink his life after becoming a father, whilst wannabe musician Jeremy, a lazy man with big ideas, finally finds himself in possession of money, power--and, finally, responsibility. Follow Mark and Jeremy from the birth of Marks baby to his christening. We also meet Marks parents for the first time, when the boys attempt to celebrate a traditional family Christmas. And a disastrous New Years Eve party crawl culminates with Mark and Jeremy facing choices that could end their friendship--forever. | Hitler: The Rise of Evil, mini-series / 1 Disc 300 Baht Starring Robert Carlyle as the Nazi dictator, Hitler: The Rise of Evil is a lavish made-for-TV two-parter that traces Adolf Hitler's early life, including his boyhood in Austria and impoverished period as a struggling artist in Vienna, culminating in 1934, by which time he had assumed the chancellorship of Germany. We bear witness to the rhetoric, ruthlessness and obsessive determination that propelled him to power, despite the best efforts of opponents like Matthew Modine's campaigning journalist. His inadequate but despotic relationships with women, such as his tragic half-niece Geli Raubal, are also examined. Carlyle fares very well in what is traditionally considered the invidious task of bringing Hitler to dramatic life, conveying him plausibly as an impenetrably evil man, complex but irredeemable. However, this drama fails to explain just how and why such a pathetic, psychotic, unattractive individual such as Hitler could make such an immediate, profound impression on, for example, Ernst Hanfstangl and his wife Nina (ER's Julianne Margulies). Disproportionate attention is paid to Hitler's relationship to this American-born couple, perhaps as a sop to US audiences. In contrast, the social, cultural and political context of inter-war Germany is skimpily depicted here, making Hitler's ascendancy seem almost absurd. | Inside Men / 2 Discs 600 BahtManager of a counting house, through which huge quantities of cash are shipped, John cuts a sad figure as a man frightened of life. Uptight and tense, bullied by his boss and mocked by his staff, perhaps impotent, he maintains an unlikely position as best performing manager through obsessive hard work, assisted by being prepared to make up from his own pocket any small shortfall in the accounts. For the most part he is almost robotically lacking in emotion, but under pressure the underlying rage on occasion bursts out. Then John's discovery of a petty theft by two of his employees triggers the idea for the heist with which the drama opens. As much a psychological drama as a thriller, the intricate and intriguing plot switches back and forth in time over a period of months, in order to explore the motivations of the "inside men" and reveal both the complex details of the planned theft, and how it works out in practice. The three main characters and the women in their lives are all strongly developed with distinct personalities. In a reverse of the norm, the earlier parts of the drama are in many ways more suspenseful and gripping than the denouement. I can understand why some viewers have reported feeling let down by the ending. My sense of disappointment was short-lived when I realised that, in leaving some morally ambiguous outcomes, the plot leaves us with a good deal of food for thought. | The Craic / 1 Disc 300 BahtThe bad guys want them dead. The fascination with the fiction of writers from Chaucer and Shakespeare to Agatha Christie, and with nonfiction very real killers like Jack the Ripper, has been an English cultural thread for centuries. The first-rate BBC series Julian Fellowes Investigates: A Most Mysterious Murder grows out of that tradition and makes for terrific viewing. Fellowes, a British character actor and screenwriter (Gosford Park), helped develop the series, and acts as its Hitchcockian narrator and Greek chorus. Each episode follows the tale of a real, unsolved English murder, occurring between the 1870s and 1940s, acted out with smashing period detail and dialogue. Fellowes narrates, helps spotlight possible suspects, and in the end makes his own case for who he thinks the murderer was--popping in and out of the period sets wryly and gracefully. The five episodes in this boxed set include The Case of Charles Bravo, which focuses on the untimely death in 1876 of the new groom of a rich lady with a shady past (one society-watcher sniffs, "The right marriage can wash away a multitude of sins"). In The Case of Rose Harsent, a fetching young servant girl is found slain in 1902 in a small town shaped by religious fervor. The tales are compellingly told, and no expense seems to have been spared on sets or period details. Extras include the must-see behind-the-scenes featurette, in which Fellowes and other top staff relate how they selected the real-life cases, how research was conducted, and how the character of Fellowess' narrator is stitched seamlessly into each episode. Fans of crime procedurals are in for a treat with this series, which combines the best of the murder mystery with a glossy Masterpiece Theatre polish. | Supply and Demand II SYNOPSIS: ESUS is an experimental unit set up to try and forge closer links between MI5 and the police force.
